LyX is a graphic interface to LaTeX. see the LyX homepage. they have a very good list there of answers to questions and tips about lyx.
ordinarily, to invoke LyX, log into any of the math servers (sundial, math1 or math2) and type lyx at the shell. (how you open a shell depends on which server you are working on and which window managare you use. usually you just click on an icon depicting a black computer screen, which should appear on a "toolbar" the bottom of the screen; or, on sundial, click the background of your desktop with the right mouse button, choose "tools", and choose "terminal").
lyx works on both all math unix servers (sundial and math1) with hebrew support. it sometimes needs some tweeking to work right, though.
if you would like to use my lyx configuration on the math department computers,
note that this will overwrite your old lyx configuration, but it won't erase any documents. it also overwrites your .cshrc file. if you know what this means and you care, install into a temporary directory and copy the configuration files manually (they reside in a directory called .lyx).
the LyX configuration above includes the following features:
note that there are really two configurations in this package, one for each server. the separating of the lyx configurations for the two servers means that if you change the configuration on one server, it won't affect your configuration when you run lyx from the other server. you'll have to make the changes twice for them to take effect.
