  • If MathJax isn't installed on the website, each format requires downloading a program for viewing and printing articles:

Format What is it? What to Install? Where to Download?
HTML HyperText Markup Language Any internet browser
Adobe PDF PDF Adobe Portable Document Format Adobe Reader get Adobe Reader download Adobe Reader for free.

Also install (as of Adobe Reader version 8): Adobe Digital Editions

DjVu DjVu.org DjVu Browser Plug-in Downloads & resources
ePub A free and open e-book standard by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) A software reading system such as: Adobe Digital Editions

What to do if the "Adobe Reader" doesn't respond, or the result is unclear?
Make sure you have the latest version of the "Adobe Reader".
Some journals may require installing the new Adobe Digital Editions

Access rules and restrictions
Who can access the e-journals?
Access is restricted to members of the Hebrew University at the Givat-Ram campus and varies according to limitations imposed by the publishers.
User validation is automatic, based on the IP identification number of the accessing authorized workstation.

Are there restrictions on e-journal use and downloading?
Acceptable Use of Electronic Resources Licensed by HUJI
Access to electronic resources is governed by license agreements which restrict use to the Hebrew University community.

It is the responsibility of each user to ensure that he or she uses these products only for individual, non-commercial use without systematically downloading, distributing, or retaining substantial portions of information. Acceptable use forbids downloading contents of entire issues of a given journal title.

The use of software such as scripts, agents, or robots, is prohibited on these resources and on most other public or free government sites, and may result in loss of access to these resources for the entire Hebrew University community.

Where can I access ejournals?
HUJI staff and students can access the service from campus computers.

Do any of the ejournals require password authentication?
Most ejournals should not require password authentication, since identification is by IP address.
If a password is required, it generaly means there is a problem and we would like to know about it.

Is wireless access available on campus?
Yes. For additional information check the Computing Authority's Wireless HUJI website: http://wireless.huji.ac.il

Can I access e-journals from home?
Accessing academic databases depends on your Internet provider (HUJI or via other networks).
Access via other networks is allowed through one of the VPN services, available to all students and staff of the Hebrew University.

For instructions, see: The Authority for Computation, Communication and Information (HUCA), The Hebrew University of Jerusalem → Services → Internet → Databases and e-journals in HUJI's libraries

How to connect via other networks/ISPs?
Those who do not connect directly to HUJI from home still have a way to fully browse library databases.

VPN (Virtual Private Network) services enable users to access HUJI's academic resources (e-journals and databases etc.), even if they are not connected directly to HUJI's network. This includes users connected to other ISP's, users from abroad, or users connecting via HUJI's wireless.

Click here for more info about HUJI's VPN services (Virtual Private Network)

Do any providers allow access from outside of a Israeli university domain?
Wiley InterScience Roaming Password Access
Beginning January 1, 2002, It is possible for individual users to obtain a 90 day password which can be used when they are outside the institutional domain (for example, while abroad).

For instructions see: Electronic Journals: Providers: Wiley Online Library

Similar services from other providers are not currently available (July 21st, 2002)

e-journals in the library

How to find an accessible e-journal?
First of all, search: Find e-Journal - Hebrew University Electronic Journals List: A-Z list of all e-journals available at Hebrew University through the SFX link.
More information More information :
FindIt @ HUJI (SFX) FAQ  /  Muriel and Philip Berman Medical Library  or  SFX, the OpenURL link resolver  /  ExLibris

If you don't find it there:

  1. Search the Electronic Journal Subscriptions of MALMAD Member Libraries (ULE)
  2. Your journal may have open access. To find it, try one of the electronic journal indexes listed:

Which providers of e-journals are accessible to the library's clients?
The Providers are listed in the Electronic Journals: Providers list.
  • The providers the library or HUJI have agreements with.
  • Selection of the providers MALMAD has agreements with.
The list also includes providers we don't have agreements with, or providers that we are in the process of signing agreements with them.

Does the library subscribe to all the e-journals on the list?
The library doesn't subscribe to all the e-journals on the lists. We included e-journals in the fields of research of our readers that are available for the following reasons:
  • E-journals available for open access on the web. They are marked as "(Open access)"
  • E-journals available through MALMAD.
We chose the e-journals we thought were relevant. The MALMAD Databases and Collections list includes many providers in all fields of research (including the Humanities and Social sciences) and many more available e-journals.

Do all the e-journals appear in the catalog?
Most of the e-journals appear in the catalog. Search for the title and click on E-Location

Some e-journals may have more than one point of access. The different full text versions may complete each other's holdings.
To find the right access (by year) use: Find e-Journal - Hebrew University Electronic Journals List: A-Z list of all e-journals available at Hebrew University through the SFX link.

Could there be access to more years than you listed?
We try to keep the list updated, but there could be changes.
The vol. and year given indicate full-text availability. For some titles, abstracts are avaliable for back issues.

Some e-journals may have more than one point of access. The different full text versions may complete each other's holdings.
Several archives are available including JSTOR. Please check the Providers page.

Some of the journals and providers are marked with a star. What does it mean?
It means that these marked electronic journals and providers aren't available yet. The library is in the process of subscribing to them.

Why don't I have access to all the volumes and years listed by the publisher?
Some of the publishers require additional payment for their archives. We subscribe to some of these archives, not all.

Who do I contact to recommend adding an e-journal to the library's list?
If there are electronic journals which you would like to see on our electronic journals lists, please contact Naavah at: library at math.huji.ac.il

MALMAD
What is MALMAD?
MALMAD (the Inter-University Center for Digital Information Services) is a joint framework (consortium) for the Acquisition, licensing and operation of information services to all the Israeli universities.
User validation is automatic, from any workstation with a university Internet identification number.
Access is via any standard WWW browser.

Is there a central list of e-journal subscriptions in Israel?
Yes. The Electronic Journal Subscriptions of MALMAD Member Libraries (ULE)

Additional resources:

  1. The MALMAD Databases and Collections list
  2. The Israel Union List of Serials (ULS): entries of these journals are updated weekly to include the URLs and subscription information. The entries in the web version of ULS link directly to the fulltext version.

Open access
Can I trust all open access ejournals and publishers?
No. Not really. For more information, and a list of questionable open-access journals and publishers, check out the Scholarly Open Access blog.
It is recommended to publish only with a member of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA).

General
What should I do if I have problems accessing an e-journal from the lists?
If repeated problems occur such as denied access or request for ID when not required by our contract, Try the following steps:
  1. If the e-journal has mirror sites, try the main site or one of the other mirror sites.
  2. Check News for announcements about temporary access problems.
  3. Contact us by email: library at math.huji.ac.il.
Please note that not all services are available on Sunday mornings.

Can I receive e-mail notification on new e-journal issues?
Yes. Many of the publishers offer e-mail notification on new issues.
Examples:
  • AMS Journals Email notification program: Through this service you can be notified via electronic mail when a new issue of a journal is posted.
  • ScienceDirect / Elsevier: Register as a personal user and check the alert box at the top left of the journal's screen.
  • SpringerAlerts / SpringerLink: Springer-Verlag, Birkhauser ... (Including notices on new online vols. of LNCS).
