A guide to the library's classification system is located on the library's card catalog.

Each number represents a subject:
  • The Mathematics classification numbers run between 00 and 109. For example: The books on set theory are classified as 13.

  • The Computer Science classification was based on the 1964 ACM Computing Classification System. Our numbers run between 210-282.
For example: The books on artificial intelligence are classified as 236.

book Call numbers

The call number is the device used to locate library materials on the shelves (located on the spine of the item). It serves to keep subject related material together. It is generally composed of 2 parts (at least).

Each call no. is organized on the shelves in the following order:

Books (by authors):
The first part of the call no. is the classification number; the second part are letters (or a combination of letters and numbers) which serve to identify each item.
Example: a book on group theory by Rotman will be identified as 23 RO.
Collections of articles:
The first part of the call no. is the word COLL.; the second part is the classification number.
Example: Coll. 23
Symposia and seminars:
The first part of the call no. is the word SYMP. or SEM.; the second part is the classification number.
Example: Symp. 23

Additional identifiers are Cutter numbers and years.

Mathematics books are marked on the spine of the item with a white strip.
Computer Science books are marked on the spine of the item with a green strip.

Reserved (overnight) books are marked with an additional yellow strip.
