"The topological pressure as a dynamical 'generating function'"

Abstract:

Ruelle and Walters had associated for suitable dynamical systems T:X-->X a certain convex functional called the topological pressure. Much like the free energy of statistical physics, the topological pressure functional encodes dynamical and statistical information on the system through the behavior of its directional derivatives and their singularities. I will describe some of this information, with particular emphasis on the meaning of the singularities ("dynamical phase transitions").

Light refreshments will be served in the faculty lounge at 3:30.
