"Periodic torus orbits and distribution of matrices with given characteristic polynomial"

Abstract:

An important class of dynamical systems is given by the action of a group H on a quotient space Gamma \ G where G is a linear group, H a subgroup of G, and Gamma a discrete subgroup.

In my talk I will consider the distribution properties of periodic orbits of this action, particularly when H is a diagonalizable abelian group and explain the relation to the distribution of matrix solutions to irreducible integer polynomials.

Based on joint work with Einsiedler, Michel, and Venkatesh

Light refreshments will be served in the faculty lounge at 3:30.
