"Topology vs. Geometry: Volumes of Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds"

Abstract:

We outline a proof that the Weeks manifold is the lowest volume closed orientable hyperbolic 3-manifold. Along the way we discuss a number of beautiful and simple ideas needed to understand the topology and geometry of low dimensional manifolds.

Light refreshments will be served outside the Lecture Hall at 3:30.

The speaker will give a further two lectures in the series in the following week.
