Erdős Lectures in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science

June 9th   13th   15th   2016

Dr. June Huh    (IAS & Princeton)

The lectures will be held at the Edmond Safra Campus    Givat Ram, Jerusalem

First talk:    Thursday, June 9, 14:30--15:30    Math colloquium talk    Mathematics building, Lecture hall 2

Hodge theory for combinatorial geometries

I will argue that some of the main results of Hodge theory continue to hold in a combinatorial realm that goes beyond that of algebraic and analytic geometry. This provides strong restrictions on some numerical invariants of graphs, vector configurations, and related combinatorial objects. This talk is for a general audience.

Joint work with Karim Adiprasito and Eric Katz.

Second talk:    Monday, June 13, 10:30--12:30    Combinatorics seminar    Rothberg building B, Room 220

Homology and cohomology of tropical varieties

A tropical variety is a piecewise linear object that (sometimes) appears as a shadow of an algebraic variety. In this talk, a gentle introduction to the Chow homology and cohomology of tropical varieties will be given. Two family of examples of combinatorial nature will be emphasized: the Stanley-Reisner ring of the boundary of a simplicial polytope, modulo linear system of parameters, and the Chow ring of a matroid.

Third talk:    Wednesday, June 15, 10:30--12:00    CS theory seminar    Rothberg building B, Room 220

Matroids in permutohedrons in flag varieties

I will talk about the three objects and the two inclusions mentioned in the title from a tropical viewpoint. Possible generalizations will be speculated.
